Tuesday, the 8th
We had a connection in Frankfurt, about three hours or so. A good portion of that was spent in transit between the arrival and departing flights. Early morning the rescreening was a very long process, the machines were incredibly sensitive, with virtually everybody setting off the machines and requiring a separate wanding.
The flights were without incident. Cosmo met us at the airport, we rented our car, and off to La Spezia (where Cosmo and his family lived), our first stop on the trip.
We were greeted with a lunch to die for. Daniella, Cosmo's wife, prepared a lunch of fresh mozzarella made with cream instead of milk. Think something with the consistency of Marshmallow Fluff, but with an incredible dense mozzarella flavor. It's the specialty of her home town a few miles away. With that we had prosciutto from Parma, about an hour away, fresh salami, olives from their relatives, tortellini in fresh tomato sauce, and some in fresh basil, and berries with cream. It would be quite hard to ask for a better lunch.
That evening we went into the first of the Cinque Terra towns for some sight seeing (they are but a few minutes away), and a seafood dinner of many local specialties.
